MUSIC

Quote of the Week:
"The musician is constantly adjusting decisions on tempo, tone, style, rhythm, phrasing and feeling - training the brain to become incredibly good at organizing and conducting numerous activities at once.  Dedicated practice of this orchestration can have a great payoff for lifelong attentional skills, intelligence, and an ability for self-knowledge and expression."
John J. Ratey, M.D.

Recorder information
Recorder Info for 3rd, 4th & 5th grade parents
All 3rd-5th grade students need a recorder they can practice and keep at home.

Valley View 3rd grade students play recorder all year.  4th grade students play recorder after Winter Break to the end of the year.  5th grade students play rec.order from the beginning of school to the Winter Break.    All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students also need a quiet place where they can concentrate and practice at home and a place where they can keep their instrument and music safe and ready to use. Only 10-15 minutes of practice a day will keep their recorder skills growing. Boogie Man Music, Fred Meyer, Bimart, and Jerrols all sell recorders.  You can also find recorders in Yakima at Walmart, K-Mart and any music store, like Ted Brown Music in the old Ward's Plaza on Nob Hill. A good recorder usually costs about $5.00.  A student should only need one recorder for all three years of playing in elementary school.  It is the students responsibility to take care of their recorder and keep it safe and clean.   3rd and 4th grade students use recorder for their grade level state assessments in the spring.  5th grade students have the option of choosing an instrument to play for their state assessment. So your $5.00 recorder investment goes a long way in your child's musical success.  Structured, daily practice helps students learn much more than music: dedication, concentration, follow-through, time management, and positive self worth are just a few of the character-building traits students can build with practice.

String Instruction Opportunities & Kittitas Valley Children's Choirs
5th grade students who want to play a string instrument through the school district string program can contact Ms. Kara Hunnicutt at:khunnicutt@eburg.wednet.edu Free school district lessons are at Mt. Stuart Elementary on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings before school. Busses bring children back to their respective schools in time for regular class. Contact Ms. Hunnicutt for more info.
Contact the music dept. at CWU's music facility for detailed information concerning the outstanding Prep Program at
prepstrings @ cwu.edu if your child needs music lessons in the afternoon instead of the morning time.  Students as young as 1st grade can sign up for lessons with the Prep. Program.
Another terrific program available for 1st-8th grade students is the
Kittitas Valley Children's Choirs run through the Prep Program.  The director for the choirs is Sue Wilson - (509)963-1238.   The opportunities for performance through these choirs are many and top rate.  Students who participate in these choirs learn quality music, sing in fun performances with top musicians, plus these choirs draw children from all over the county, so students get to meet new friends and share musical experiences with a wider variety of people and places than they can at their own schools.
